Bon Secours Continues Progress on the Development of an Urgent Care Location in the East End
Access to Medical Services

Set to open in Spring 2024, construction is well underway on a new Urgent Care site located in the East End Medical Office building on Nine Mile Road. In response to feedback from community stakeholders, Bon Secours is currently recruiting a team of professionals, who specialize in treating minor illnesses and injuries. The Urgent Care location will treat:

Allergies and Asthma Ear Aches, Ear Infections and Swimmer's Ear
Bug Bites, Spider Bites Stomach Pain, Vomiting
Bronchitis Sore Throat, Strep Throat
Colds, Cough and Flu Sprains, Strains and Minor Fractures
Cuts and Minor Stitches Urinary Tract Infections


Richmond Community Hospital Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art MRI Imaging Suite and Main Patient Registration Lobby
Access to Medical Services

In partnership with PSH+ Architecture and Design, and Taylor & Parris Construction, Richmond Community Hospital has started construction on our new MRI suite and patient lobby. The service will feature the latest MRI Imaging technology and is scheduled to be completed in the Spring of 2024.

New Medical Services Available to the East End Community in Multi-Disciplinary Specialty Clinic

Richmond Community Hospital continues to grow access to care for the residents of the East End. In direct response to feedback from Community Stakeholders and the East End Clinical Advisory group, Bon Secours has expanded additional outpatient services with a multi-specialty clinic located in the RCH Medical Office Building in the fourth quarter of 2023 to include:

- October 31, 2023 - Tele-Neurology Care: Kay Bonyak, APRN

- December 5, 2023 - Behavioral Health Outpatient Services: Osita Mbadugha, MD & Kelley Germaine Pope, APRN

- December 13, 2023 - Endocrine and Diabetes Care: John Clore, MD

Bon Secours OB/GYN Outpatient Clinic Expands to Provide Excellent Care to Women in the East End
Access to Medical Services

Since opening on June 12, 2023, Sam Campbell, MD, within the Bon Secours OB/GYN Outpatient Clinic at RCH has completed over 1,500 patient visits. Due to high demand the practice will expand in January of 2024 to meet community need. Leah Choate, MSN, RNC-OB, Certified Nurse Midwife will join the practice in early 2024.


Richmond Community Hospital Recognizes Dr. Richard Jackson as the 2023 Medical Staff Special Honoree
Community Partnerships

Dr. Richard Jackson is a legend who stands on the shoulders of this grandfather Dr. Isiah Jackson, co-founder of Richmond Community Hospital in 1907, and father Dr. Reginald Jackson, one of the 21 founders of the current RCH Campus on Nine Mile Road. During his studies, Dr. Jackson was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor Society. He is the founder of Dominion Medical Associates, having over 40 years of experience as a board-certified physician in both Internal Medicine and Critical Care. On October 2, 2023, he was honored at the Annual Medical Staff Meeting as 2023 Medical Staff Special Honoree.

Bon Secours Awards $140,000 in Small Business Grants to 2023 SEED Recipients
Community Partnerships

Bon Secours hosted an awards ceremony at the Robinson Theater in December, celebrating the 11 small East End businesses that received grants totaling more than $140,000 through the Supporting East End Entrepreneurship Development (SEED) program in 2023. SEED began in 2011 as an economic development and job creation initiative for Richmond’s East End neighborhood. In addition to grants, businesses received services on marketing, financing and more. This year, Bon Secours, along with our partners InUnison and LISC Va, celebrated surpassing an investment of $1 million in grants and more than 10 years of the SEED program.

Richmond Community Hospital and Community Health Teams Offer Walk-In and Drive-Thru Flu Vaccinations
Wellness & Prevention

Richmond Community Hospital hosted a Drive-Thru and Walk-In Community Flu Vaccination Clinic on October 21, 2023. The Richmond Community Hospital Pharmacy and Emergency Department Teams gathered to offer free and convenient vaccinations to community members. The team successfully administered flu vaccines to more than 60 members of the community.

Richmond Community Hospital Hosts State Health Commissioner
Community Partnerships

Leadership from the Richmond market and Richmond Community Hospital hosted Dr. Karen Shelton, State Health Commissioner with the Virginia Department of Health. We shared with her some of the exciting initiatives happening within our market and the East End, including our behavioral health partial hospitalization program, our expansion of OB/GYN services on the campus, our ability to transfer patients in a timely manner through our partnership with the Richmond Ambulance Authority, and the forthcoming Bon Secours Urgent Care, East End location.

Richmond Community Hospital Expands Surgical Services to Include Pediatric Dentistry
Access to Medical Services

Richmond Community Hospital is proud to partner with multiple local Pediatric Dentistry practices to provide surgical services to the Richmond area. Throughout the Fall, the Hospital has partnered with Dental and Anesthesia providers to enhance equipment, solidify policies and procedures, recruit professionals, and credential and onboard new physicians. The new service will begin in January, with the first Pediatric surgical case that will take place in the OR is already scheduled.

Captain Anthony Jackson joins Richmond Community Hospital Community Advisory Council
Community Partnerships

Richmond Community Hospital welcomed Captain Anthony Jackson, Precinct Commander for the First Precinct of Richmond to the Community Advisory Council. Captain Jackson has made an immediate impact, offering key insights into safety measures across the campus, and has also started working with the hospital to identify greenspace expansion opportunities. The RCH Community Advisory Council meets quarterly and is designed to work alongside the Patient Family Advisory Council to better inform hospital and community leaders on ways we can continue to improve services to the East End.

Bon Secours Community Health Team Onboards Four AmeriCorps Community Health Workers
Community Partnerships

In partnership with the City of Richmond, Bon Secours has onboarded four Community Health Workers to be deployed through AmeriCorps. These four volunteers, who will be supporting the East End Community and patients of Richmond Community Hospital to improve their health and connection to resources in food access, housing, transportation, employment, and childcare began their onboarding in October 2023. The program will run through the Fall of 2024 with the goal of connecting the AmeriCorps Community Health Workers to ongoing career opportunities in the field of health care.



 

Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital Successfully Partners with the Richmond Office of Community Wealth Building to Host the First East End Health Care Career Event
Training and Education – Community Partnerships

Richmond Community Hospital, Bon Secours Talent Acquisition, and the City of Richmond Office of Community Wealth Building (OCWB) hosted a Health care Interview and Career Information Event for OCWB clients on October 20th and 21st. The event, a product of a six-month planning engagement between the organizations, connected members of the OCWB to jobs within Bon Secours that met their education and training backgrounds. Candidates were prepared for interviews with hiring managers on-site, and 35 members of the community were introduced to health care career pathways as a result of the partnership. Leaders within the OCWB and Bon Secours are committed to an ongoing partnership, and planning for future events is underway.

Sarah Garland Jones Center Implements New East End Cooking & Conversations Series
Wellness & Prevention

The Bon Secours East End Neighborhood Engagement Team completed the first implementation of Cooking & Conversations, a new program to support community members and patients through targeted nutrition education, community building, and healthy food access. These 4-week programs have a health focus, and the first session focused on diabetes. The next session will be focused on mental health and begin first quarter 2024.

Richmond Artist Hamilton Glass Partners with Bon Secours to Honor Founding Physicians of RCH’s East End Campus
Community Partnerships

In a transformation project with Richmond Artist Hamilton Glass, Richmond Community Hospital will re-establish the mixed-media portrait mural depicting the founding physicians of Richmond Community Hospital’s East End campus within its newly dedicated Legacy Garden. The work began in early October and the completed project is now a focal point of the Richmond Community Hospital Campus. Originally designed and displayed outside of the Sarah Garland Jones Center, the new rendition of the artwork is central to a larger Legacy Garden project honoring the 21 physicians who established the Church Hill Nine Mile Road Campus of Richmond Community Hospital in 1980.

Community Partnerships

The Sarah Garland Jones Center partnered with the Broken Men Foundation to provide food vouchers to the Market at 25th, coats, blankets, and other resources to over 100 community members in preparation for Thanksgiving.

Sarah Garland Jones Center and Richmond Community Hospital Host Grand Illumination and Angel Tree Event
Community Partnerships

For the third year in a row, Richmond Community Hospital and The Sarah Garland Jones Center hosted the Holiday Grand Illumination and East End Angel Tree Event on November 29th for community members. In partnership with the Reflections Senior Community, Rise Café, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Rho Eta Omega Chapter, the event featured live musical performances, a Holiday meal served to the residents of Reflections and others in attendance, a countdown to the Tree and Holiday Lighting Ceremony, and even a special guest appearance from St. Nick.

Bon Secours Hypertension Management Program at Richmond Community Hospital – Presented at the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association Foundation’s Heart Disease and Stroke Learning Collaboration

Hypertension is the leading preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease mortality in the East End of Richmond, disproportionately affecting the Black community. Bon Secours is in the process of working with patients between the ages of 18 and 75 who have been diagnosed with hypertension and receive care at Dr. Charmaine Elliott’s practice (Primary Care Associates) in the past 12 months focusing on key interventions including:

· Medication Management

· Monitoring of Labs in 3-month periods from baseline

· Blood pressure checks at every visit

· Lifestyle changes and plans established with Registered Dietician

· Smoking Cessation

· Social Determinants of Health Screening and Interventions with Community Health Workers

Richmond Market Leading the Way on Efforts to Increase Investments with Minority-Owned Businesses
Community Partnerships

Bon Secours is continuing to find new ways to boost diverse supplier inclusion by creating new pathways to increase spending on minority-owned solutions. The Richmond market is leading this work for the Bon Secours Mercy Health Ministry by continuing to partner with organizations to learn best practices and is setting new expectations and implementing meaningful change regarding diverse spend goals.
