Bon Secours Announces Plans to Open Urgent Care in the East End
Access to Medical Services

Bon Secours has announced plans to open an Urgent Care located in the new East End Medical Office Building. This new care model will provide more access to care and services in response to a growing number of patients seeking convenient, accessible care for minor illnesses and injuries. Urgent care is designed for today’s busy families who need convenient retail sites with free, easy parking, walk-in appointments, the option to reserve a spot online, and the added connection to a health system if a higher level of care is needed. Construction on the new Bon Secours Urgent Care, East End, is expected to start in Q3 with an anticipated opening by the end of Q4 2023.

Richmond Community Hospital Opens Outpatient OB/GYN Clinic in the East End
Access to Medical Services

Richmond OB/GYN, an obstetrics and gynecology provider of Bon Secours Richmond, has opened a new office on the campus of Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital in the East End. The outpatient clinic opened on June 12 and is operating Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.4- p.m., located in the Richmond Community Medical Office Building at 1510 N 28th Street, Suite 204, Richmond, Va. 23223. Samuel Campbell, M.D. and Richmond OB/GYN will serve women of all ages in all stages of life on Richmond Community’s campus, providing professional, state-of-the-art medical care, including all areas of obstetrical and gynecological care; urogynecology; three-dimensional and four-dimensional ultrasound; 3-D mammography, and pelvic medicine services. In addition, Dr. Campbell will provide consultative services to the RCH emergency department (ED), ensuring access to specialty care in the community.

Richmond Community Hospital to Begin Construction on New $4.5M MRI Suite in Q3
Access to Medical Services

Following a planning process which began in early 2022, Richmond Community Hospital will begin construction on the build-out of a $4.5 million MRI suite in Q3. This expansion will ensure patients of the East End community access to the newest MRI technology within Bon Secours’ Richmond market, while also improving the patient experience with the expansion of the main lobby and outpatient patient registration area. Opening is anticipated for Q1 2024.



Richmond Community Hospital Beautification Plan Updates
Community Partnerships

Bon Secours is continuing its campus-wide beautification project at Richmond Community Hospital. To date, we’ve renovated our hospital chapel, established a legacy garden, completed painting our buildings to create a more cohesive, unified campus look and have updated our signage. As part of our next steps, we are working with local muralist Hamilton Glass to create a mural honoring the 21 Richmond Community Hospital founders, and street art at the intersection of Nine Mile Road and 27th St. in collaboration with community partners.




Health Explorers Program to Kick off on July 10 with Boys & Girls Club
Training & Education

Bon Secours is excited to hold our first Health Explorers program this summer, which will run for six weeks from July 10 through August 11th, in partnership with the East End Boys & Girls Club. Fifteen students will participate in site visits to Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital, Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital, Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, and the Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing. Through this program leaders across various departments will facilitate learning experiences and activities for the students to introduce them to potential careers in health care, which will culminate with a graduation ceremony at the end of the program.


Passport to Wellness Event Attracted Over 100 East End Residents

On April 29th, Bon Secours hosted a successful Passport to Wellness Event with over 100 members of the community, which featured yoga, food, women’s and men’s health education, dentistry, mental health, financial literacy, health, and fitness resources to local community members.

Welcome Shekinah Mitchell, Director Neighborhood Engagement!

Shekinah has over 15 years of experience in comprehensive community development and currently serves as Director of Neighborhood Engagement on the Community Health team for Bon Secours Richmond. She is a lifelong resident of the East End of Richmond and has worked within local, regional, statewide and national organizations including Virginia Commonwealth University, Urban Hope RVA, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Virginia Early Childhood Foundation, and Piedmont Community Land Trust. Shekinah holds a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Bachelor’s in Business Management from Radford University, and holds a certification in Racial and Intersectional Equity through Converge College.


Fall Recruitment Event
Training & Education

Bon Secours is partnering with the Office of Community Wealth Building, and City of Richmond to host an East End Recruitment fair at Richmond Community Hospital October 20th and 21st, 2023. At the event, Bon Secours will provide resources demonstrating potential healthcare career pathways, including information from current healthcare professionals on their day-to-day, skillsets, education and earning potential information.

Cancer Screening Center
Wellness & Prevention

Bon Secours is working with Davis Brothers Construction, to establish the Richmond Community Hospital Cancer Screening Center, within the main hospital at 1500 N. 28th St. The project, to kick off in Q3 of 2023, will establish a centralized location providing key preventative services to include 3D Mammography, Low Dose CT, and Colonoscopy procedures.

PFAC Launch
Community Partnerships

RCH’s Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC) launched in May 2023. The PFAC involves patients, family, leadership, and staff as partners for policy and program discussions in healthcare settings. Council members will advise and recommend changes that will benefit and enhance the patient's experience. Richmond Community PFAC is made up of various leaders from Richmond Community Hospital and community members who bring insights on topics such as registration process, signage and wayfinding, bathrooms, and more. The third committee meeting will take place this month on July 18th.

Bon Secours Partners with City of Richmond on AmeriCorps Program for City Residents
Wellness & Prevention – Community Partnerships

In the second quarter Bon Secours committed to host five members of a new City of Richmond AmeriCorps program: the RVA Health Corps at Richmond Community Hospital.  In May of 2023, the City of Richmond announced the receipt of an AmeriCorps grant to hire and train 16 city residents to serve as community health workers in Richmond’s low-income neighborhoods.  This team of community health workers will reflect the communities they serve and provide 1) nutrition education 2) mental health literacy and 3) informal chronic disease and mental health counseling, as well as referrals to healthcare providers, local health agencies, and community organizations.  At the end of this year-long program, the AmeriCorps team will have obtained their community health worker licensure and be positioned to pursue a sustainable career in community health.  Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital and Community Health teams are proud to host 5 of the 16 identified city residents, starting in September.

Bon Secours Community Health Team Joins VHHA Health Equity Intensive Program

The Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association (VHHA) invited Bon Secours’ Community Health Team to take part in its Health Equity Intensive program that supports health system team pursuing projects to improve chronic disease outcomes by addressing social drivers of health.  The program enables health system participants to learn best practices and key insights into building impactful health interventions that are focused on health equity.  The Community Health team is working closely with Richmond Community Hospital to pilot a hypertension intervention program that will focus on connecting East End patients with key medical and community supports to improve the quality and management individuals with hypertension.

Bon Secours Senior Care Services and Home-Based Primary Care to Join the RCH Campus
Wellness & Prevention

Bon Secours Senior Care Services (SCS) and Home-based Primary Care (HBPC) will occupy the East End Medical Office Building. SCS manages the care of patients discharged from Bon Secours hospitals to skilled nursing facilities and our HBPC team provides primary care for home-bound patients. This move will align our care continuum services in the East End that care for seriously ill patients and provide opportunities to expand these services in the East End community.

Bon Secours Mercy Health Announces Commitment to Reach at Least 10% of New Hires from Economically Disadvantaged Areas

Bon Secours is one of 17 health systems across the country to join in signing an “Impact Workforce Commitment” (IWC) to build healthy and equitable local economies through their hiring and workforce development programs and policies. The commitment, designed in partnership with a leadership group of Healthcare Anchor Network (HAN) member health systems and the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, includes aligning hiring and workforce power with clinical and community efforts to provide opportunities for individuals who may have faced barriers to employment due to myriad factors. These factors include low income, lack of access to education and training, or other socio-economic challenges. The commitment aims to improve societal health and well-being by creating economic opportunities and addressing racial inequities in the communities the signatories serve.

Palliative Care Joint Commission Survey
Access to Medical Services

In April 2023 Richmond Community Palliative Medicine team received their 4th recertification following initial certification in 2014. Palliative medicine consult volumes continue to grow year over year, and we continue to collaborate closely with Bon Secours Hospice to serve our seriously ill patients. The surveyor was very complementary of the level of engagement and collaboration across the multidisciplinary teams and described our program as inspirational.
