Bon Secours is proud to announce a major milestone in surgical care: the successful completion of South Carolina’s first BiPortal Endoscopic Spine surgeries. This ultra minimally invasive technique represents a major step forward in treating spinal conditions with less pain, faster recovery, and smaller incisions.

Performed by the skilled surgical team at Bon Secours St. Francis Downtown Hospital, these groundbreaking procedures offer a new option for patients suffering from spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and other degenerative spine issues.

BiPortal Endoscopic Spine Surgery involves making two incisions, smaller than an average ink pen. These entry points – one for a high-definition camera and one for surgical instruments – allow surgeons to access and treat the spine with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue. Compared to traditional open surgery, this technique results in reduced muscle damage, less blood loss, and a faster return to normal activities.

“We’re thrilled to bring this advanced option to patients in South Carolina,” said Dr. Earl Troup with Bon Secours Piedmont Spine and Neurosurgical Group. “BiPortal Endoscopy combines precision and efficiency to improve the surgical experience and outcomes for our patients.”

Dr. Troup, along with Dr. Adam Mathes and Dr. Samuel Asante, are all fully trained in BiPortal Endoscopic Spine Surgery. Their expertise ensures more patients across the region can benefit from this cutting-edge approach to spine care. This achievement reflects the dedication and expertise of the entire surgical and operating room team at Bon Secours, as well as the health system’s ongoing commitment to innovation in patient care.

“This is a proud moment for our ministry and the community we serve,” said Chris O’Donnell, Vice President of Surgical Services at Bon Secours. “Being the first in the state to offer BiPortal spine surgery highlights our leadership in delivering advanced, patient-centered care.”

Bon Secours remains committed to bringing the latest in medical advancements to the Upstate region and beyond, ensuring patients have access to the best care close to home.
