Bon Secours Richmond is announcing the launch of behavioral health partial hospital (PHP) programs in Richmond’s East End and in Petersburg. These programs will provide intensive outpatient care for adults living with behavioral health and substance use disorders, serving as an important step between traditional outpatient care and the behavioral health services we offer via hospitalization at both Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital in Richmond and Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg.

There are many factors that contribute to the health of a population, and our community residents and stakeholders have been very helpful over the years in helping Bon Secours identify health, social and economic issues that need our attention through our Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). A vital area of focus consistently present in our analysis is the need for enhanced behavioral health services.

“We are proud to be responding directly to community need and providing more access to critical behavioral health services,” said Joey Trapani, chief operating officer for Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital and behavioral health service line lead for Bon Secours Richmond. “These partial hospitalization programs are the only ones of their kind in both the East End and in the Petersburg areas. It is our hope that these programs will make a big difference in the lives of the people that need them, and that we can improve the mental health of our community, which has historically been under-resourced.”

Built upon best practices and run by experienced licensed professionals, the PHP will provide innovative and intensive care for adults living with behavioral health and substance use disorders. The intensive program is run five days a week in a specialized group therapy setting with an integrated team of physicians, clinical social workers and registered nurses. Patients who have experienced a change in behavior, consistent depression, ongoing anxiety or those who are not making any improvements with traditional outpatient therapy may be a fit for these programs. If you are in need of an assessment, we welcome you to reach out directly at (804) 287-7836 for either our East End location on the campus of Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital or our Petersburg location at Bon Secours Southside Medical Center.

For more than 25 years, Bon Secours has been an anchor in Richmond’s East End neighborhood, making substantial investments to improve the health and well-being of East End residents by addressing the social determinants of health, including health promotion, job creation, food access, transportation, education and affordable housing. Most recently, Bon Secours broke ground on a new 25,000 square foot, $16 million medical office building on the campus of Richmond Community Hospital. The behavioral health program on Richmond Community Hospital’s campus will move from its temporary space into the new East End Medical Office Building upon its completion.

Bon Secours acquired Southside Medical Center in 2020 and has been working tirelessly to extend our Mission of improving the health and well-being of the community to the greater Petersburg area.
