OptumHealth has once again named Bon Secours St. Francis Eastside a bariatric surgery Center of Excellence® (COE). This follows the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) accreditation that the hospital maintains from the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and the Bariatric Surgery.
Hospitals that earn the Optum Health’s bariatric surgery Center of Excellence designation perform more successful bariatric procedures than many other facilities nearby and patients undergoing the procedures experience fewer complications.
COEs also have:
• 19% lower mortality rate compared to non-COE providers
• 30-39% lower inpatient hospital readmission rate
• 24% lower reoperation rate for bariatric procedures
• $4,700 lower average cost per surgical episode
“Earning this recognition again reflects our ongoing dedication to helping patients transform their lives through safe, effective weight loss options,” said Katie Nowakowski, Director of Disease Management at Bon Secours. “Our team takes great pride in providing comprehensive, compassionate care that supports each patient’s journey – not just in the operating room, but every step along the way.”
Studies show obesity affects more than 40% of U.S. adults and remains the second leading cause of preventable death nationwide. Among working-age adults (ages 40 to 59), the rate climbs to nearly 46%. Conditions associated with obesity – such as diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems – further increase both the physical and financial burden. Bariatric surgery continues to be one of the most effective tools for reducing the long-term personal, medical, and economic costs associated with obesity.
Bariatric surgeons Dr. David Anderson and Dr. Jessica Gonzalez Hernandez, bariatric physician assistant Ashley Colatriano, and dietitian Lauren Hill make up Bon Secours St. Francis Eastside’s Surgical Weight Loss program.
At Bon Secours, our weight loss program provides a comprehensive approach to weight loss that includes both surgical and non-surgical treatment options. To learn more, visit bonsecours.com.
