Key points about COVID-19

  • COVID-19 is caused by a virus called the coronavirus
  • It spreads through the air and by touching contaminated surfaces
  • Most people get better at home, but it can be serious for some

COVID-19 causes

COVID-19 spreads from person to person, mostly through the air.

  • Breathing in droplets when someone coughs, sneezes or talks
  • Touching your face after touching something with the virus
  • Being in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces

COVID-19 risk factors

Some people are more likely to get really sick from COVID-19.

  • Older adults (especially over age 65)
  • People with health problems like diabetes or lung disease
  • People who are not vaccinated
  • Those with weak immune systems
  • People who spend time in crowded indoor places

COVID-19 symptoms

Symptoms can be mild or strong and may show up 2–14 days after being exposed.

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough or shortness of breath
  • Tiredness or muscle aches
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Headache or sore throat
  • Runny nose, nausea or diarrhea

COVID-19 diagnosis

You need a test to know for sure if you have COVID-19.

  • Rapid at-home tests give results in minutes
  • PCR lab tests are more accurate but take longer
  • Some people may need more than one test to confirm

COVID-19 treatment

Most people can recover at home, but treatment depends on how sick you are.

  • Rest and drink plenty of fluids
  • Take over-the-counter medicine for fever or pain
  • Stay away from others until you're not contagious
  • Go to the hospital if breathing is hard or symptoms get worse
  • Doctors may use antiviral medications or give oxygen for serious cases

When to seek care

Call a doctor or get emergency help if:

  • You have trouble breathing
  • Your lips or face turn blue or gray
  • You feel confused or very sleepy
  • You have chest pain that won’t go away
  • Your symptoms are getting worse instead of better
