Key points about basic metabolic panel (BMP)
- Checks blood sugar, calcium, electrolytes, and kidney function
- Often part of routine labs or hospital care
- May require fasting, depending on what’s being measured
- Quick blood draw with minimal discomfort
- Helps monitor chronic conditions and detect early health problems
Overview
A basic metabolic panel is a group of blood tests that measures important body chemicals like glucose (sugar), calcium, sodium, potassium, and kidney-related markers like BUN and creatinine. It helps detect problems with your metabolism, kidney health, or fluid and electrolyte balance.
Candidates for BMP
You may need a BMP if you:
- Have symptoms like weakness, confusion, or dehydration
- Are managing conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or kidney problems
- Are being admitted to the hospital or having surgery
- Need regular lab work to monitor treatment
Preparation for BMP
Your doctor may ask you to fast (no food or drink except water) for 8–12 hours before the test, especially if it includes a glucose check. Always follow your provider’s instructions.
Risks for BMP
This is a very low-risk test. Minor soreness or bruising may occur where the blood sample was taken, but complications are rare.
Recovery from BMP
There’s no recovery time. You can eat, drink, and return to your normal routine right after your blood is drawn.
