Joseph Craig Merrell, MD, FACS
Dr. Merrell graduated summa cum laude from Wake Forest University in 1975. He received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Virginia in 1977. This was followed by training in General Surgery at the Hershey Medical Center. He completed a residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Southern Illinois University in 1983 and a year’s fellowship in Microsurgery. Dr. Merrell has been in private practice in the Hampton Roads area since 1983.
Dr. Merrell was certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1977. He became a Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon after successfully completing written and oral examinations in 1984. In addition he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and has also passed examinations to qualify as a board certified hand surgeon. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American and World Societies for Reconstructive Microsurgery.
Dr. Merrell has contributed as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Eastern Virginia Medical School and served for almost 20 years the Director of Microsurgery for OperationSMILE. He served three years as member of the Board of Trustees of Southern Virginia College. In 2005 Dr. Merrell took a three year sabbatical to serve as president of the France Toulouse Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Dr. Merrell has privileges at three area hospitals and cares for the majority of his patients at Sentara Obici Hospital. He is pleased also to offer state of the art outpatient surgery at the Harbour View Center for Excellence in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
