Dr. Barber, a native of Depew, New York, served four years in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman before attending Niagara University, in Niagara Falls, New York, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science. During his first two years of college, Dr. Barber enrolled in the Army ROTC program. During his last two years in college, Dr. Barber served as a 2nd Lieutenant in an Army Reserve unit in Niagara Falls, New York. After college he transferred to the US Navy Medical Corps and attended the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, where in 1987 he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine with the rank of Lieutenant. Dr. Barber received his general surgery training at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth.
After duty assignments which included the USS Mount Whitney, Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Dr. Barber completed his vascular surgery fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. From 2001 until he retired from the Navy in June 2003, Commander Barber, MC, USN, served as a vascular surgeon at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth. Immediately prior to his retirement from the Navy, Dr. Barber served in Kuwait at a field hospital in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Vascular Surgery.
