Patients across the Richmond region seeking treatment for chronic back pain and spinal conditions now have access to a more coordinated, streamlined care experience through the launch of the Bon Secours Spine Institute, a regional program designed to simplify spine care and connect patients more quickly to the right level of treatment.
Back pain and other spinal conditions are among the most common causes of pain and mobility limitations, particularly for older adults. For many patients, care can involve multiple providers, repeated visits and uncertainty about the most appropriate treatment path. The Bon Secours Spine Institute was created to address this challenge by bringing together orthopedic spine specialists, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pain management, surgical expertise and rehabilitation services within a coordinated care model.
At the center of the program is a nurse navigation model, where a dedicated provider reviews each patient’s history, symptoms and prior treatments to help guide them to the most appropriate specialist more efficiently. The goal is to reduce delays, improve coordination between providers and support more personalized treatment planning.
“Spine conditions are rarely one-dimensional,” said Jed Vanichkachorn, M.D., medical director of orthopedics and spine for Bon Secours. “Patients often benefit from multiple types of care working together. This model is designed to help patients move more directly into the right care plan, whether that involves therapy, pain management or surgical evaluation.”
The Bon Secours Spine Institute offers a full continuum of spine care, including non-surgical pain management, advanced minimally invasive procedures, robotic-assisted spine surgery, and rehabilitation services focused on long-term function and mobility.
Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team that includes orthopedic and neurosurgery spine surgeons, physician assistants, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, and nurse navigators working together across the care journey.
“We focus on treating the whole patient, not just a single scan or symptom,” Dr. Vanichkachorn said. “Our goal is to restore function and improve quality of life in a way that is sustainable over time.”
The Bon Secours Spine Institute operates as a regional network of care locations, allowing patients to access spine services closer to where they live and work across the Richmond region. Services are available on the campuses of Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital, Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, Bon Secours Southside Medical Center, as well as Bon Secours Spine Care at Sauer Center and Bon Secours Tuckahoe Orthopedics in Short Pump.
Patients can access the Bon Secours Spine Institute by calling 804-423-1460.
