Two Bon Secours hospitals have been awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade: Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Va.. which is located in Bon Secours’ Richmond market, and Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Va., which is located in Bon Secours’ Hampton Roads market.

In addition to the spring top honors, both St. Mary’s Hospital and Mary Immaculate Hospital have been designated as “Straight A” hospitals for consistently demonstrating a commitment to putting patients first. These designations recognize these hospitals’ efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care.

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns a letter grade to hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance measures on preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections, as well as other systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm to patients in their care.

“As our health care system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of Bon Secours for sustained commitment to patient safety, day in and day out,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud.”

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
