Four Bon Secours hospitals have been awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s fall 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. Of the four hospitals, two hospitals are located in the Bon Secours Richmond market and two are located in the Bon Secours Hampton Roads market. The designation recognizes the hospitals’ efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns a letter grade to hospitals across the country based on more than thirty national performance measures on preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections, and other systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm to patients in their care.

The Bon Secours Richmond hospitals receiving an ‘A’ hospital safety grade include Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond and Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian. In the Bon Secours Hampton Roads market, Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News and Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth received an ‘A’ hospital safety grade.

“An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a tremendous achievement, of which this community should be extremely proud,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I thank the leadership and workforce of Bon Secours for their commitment to prioritizing patients and their safety, especially during these trying times.”

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
