Bon Secours has acquired Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center (SMOC), effective Nov. 1. The long-established practice has served patients in Chesapeake, Suffolk and communities across the Hampton Roads region for more than four decades.

Founded in 1984, SMOC is recognized throughout Southeastern Virginia for its comprehensive orthopedic care delivered by fellowship-trained physicians. The practice offers expertise across a range of specialties, such as spine care, sports medicine, joint replacement, pain management and treatment of conditions affecting the shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, knee, foot and ankle.

The acquisition brings SMOC into the Bon Secours network, strengthening orthopedic care coordination across Hampton Roads. SMOC’s three locations will be rebranded as Bon Secours Orthopedics and will operate alongside Bon Secours’ existing orthopedic physicians and practices throughout Hampton Roads. Patients will continue seeing the providers they know and trust while gaining access to additional resources and services available through the Bon Secours network.

"We are excited to welcome Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center to Bon Secours and to our compassionate health ministry,” said Pat Davis-Hagens, market president, Bon Secours Hampton Roads. “For more than 40 years, SMOC has earned a trusted reputation and delivered exceptional orthopedic care to patients across our community. By bringing our organizations together, we can create a more connected and seamless experience for patients throughout Hampton Roads.”

As part of the transaction, care providers and associates were offered positions with Bon Secours. Additional terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

As the integration moves forward, existing SMOC patients will gain access to new tools and expanded care options through Bon Secours:

Access to Bon Secours MyChart, allowing them to:

  • Schedule appointments
  • Request prescription refills
  • Communicate with providers
  • View test results through a single electronic health record platform

Expanded access to care, such as:

  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Physical therapy and outpatient rehabilitation
  • Primary care and specialty care services

"We are proud to join Bon Secours and continue providing exceptional orthopedic care to our patients,” said Bryan Fox, M.D., orthopedic spine surgeon with Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center. “This partnership allows us to build on a strong clinical foundation while providing patients with access to a broader network of services, advanced technology and coordinated care. We look forward to continuing to serve our communities as part of Bon Secours.”

Davis-Hagens said the acquisition aligns with Bon Secours’ ongoing efforts to strengthen its services across Hampton Roads. "Healthcare continues to evolve, and we are always looking for opportunities to strengthen our ministry and better serve our communities. By combining the expertise of Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center with the resources of Bon Secours, we can enhance access to orthopedic care, improve coordination across the continuum and support healthier communities across Hampton Roads."
