Bon Secours leaders and associates, together with local elected officials, community members and partners, broke ground today on a new patient tower at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital, marking a $200 million investment that will expand access to care, modernize facilities and enhance the experience for patient families from across the Virginia Peninsula.
“Today is about honoring the legacy of care this hospital has provided for generations while investing confidently in what comes next,” said Alan George, president of Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital. “Mary Immaculate has long been a trusted place of healing, and this milestone reinforces our commitment to supporting families and caregivers with an environment designed for exceptional, compassionate care well into the future.”
The new 144,000-square-foot, four-story tower will significantly expand and strengthen key services, including emergency care, the birthing experience, and critical care for adults and babies. The project also features redesigned main and emergency entrances, improving access and making it easier for patients and families to navigate the hospital.
Additional highlights of the expansion include:
- A transformed Emergency Department that doubles capacity from 15 to 30 beds, plus 10 additional observation beds to improve patient flow and reduce wait times.
- A new state of the art labor and delivery unit designed to support mothers, babies and families throughout their birthing experience.
- An expanded NICU growing from eight to 10 rooms, including specialized rooms for multiples.
- Enhanced critical care services featuring a new ICU and a universal care model allowing critical patients to remain on the same unit at all levels of care, offering flexibility and advanced technology for highly acute patients.
- Modern, spacious patient rooms designed for comfort, privacy and families at the bedside.
- Redesigned main and emergency entrances that improve access, wayfinding and the first impression for patients and visitors.
The new tower is purpose-built to deliver the kind of care patients and families expect today while anticipating the needs of tomorrow. Thoughtfully designed spaces, advanced technology and flexible, higher-acuity capabilities come together to create an environment where clinical excellence and human-centered care go hand in hand.
“This project represents more than an investment in infrastructure. It is an investment in people,” George added. “It gives our care teams the space, tools and flexibility they need to deliver exceptional outcomes, while creating a more seamless and supportive experience for patients and families. From welcoming new life to supporting those who need us most, this tower brings together clinical excellence and a deeply human approach.”
City leaders also recognized the project as a meaningful investment in both the health and economic vitality of the region.
“This investment underscores the importance of strong partnerships in building healthier communities,” said Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones. “Bon Secours has long been a trusted healthcare provider in our city, and this project will ensure residents continue to have access to high-quality care where they live, work and play.”
In conjunction with the groundbreaking, the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Foundation will advance the next phase of its Advance & Empower campaign, offering opportunities for community members and philanthropic partners to support the patient tower and critical programs across the region.
Construction on the new patient tower is expected to be completed in 2028.
