Yesterday, at a ceremonial ribbon cutting event, Bon Secours Hampton Roads celebrated the opening of Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center, marking both a significant expansion of its health care footprint in Western Hampton Roads and the launch of Bon Secours Mercy Health’s first smart hospital.
Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center will officially begin serving patients on May 6, 2025.
“For more than two decades, Bon Secours has been committed to improving access to quality care in Suffolk and Western Hampton Roads,” said Pat Davis-Hagens, market president, Bon Secours Hampton Roads. “This hospital represents the next step in that commitment — a place where technology, compassion, and community converge to deliver exceptional care closer to home.”
The newly constructed, three-story, 100,000-square-foot hospital adjoins the longstanding Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View, creating a comprehensive, full-service medical campus in Suffolk. With an investment of approximately $85 million, this new facility brings 18 private inpatient rooms, four state-of-the-art operating rooms, with access to emergency, imaging, primary care and specialty services — all designed to meet the growing needs of one of the region’s fastest-developing communities.
The medical center is the first smart hospital within the Bon Secours Mercy Health system, powered by a strategic partnership with Hellocare.ai, an end-to-end digital health care delivery platform, and Accrete Health Partners, the digital transformation engine of Bon Secours Mercy Health, and a digital transformation leader in health system innovation.
Through this collaboration, Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center features a secure, unified, AI-enabled digital care platform that enhances the patient experience and patient safety, while supporting clinicians with real-time data, virtual nursing, ambient documentation and digital whiteboards.
The hospital’s smart inpatient rooms are equipped with integrated technologies designed to improve safety, efficiency, and communication, including:
- Privacy-controlled switch glass windows
- Nurse alcoves with direct patient sight lines
- Patient safety sensors to detect fall risks and patient movement
- Digital whiteboards showing real-time patient information
- Virtual nursing and telehealth capabilities
These technologies not only support clinical decision-making and reduce administrative burden, but also elevate the quality, privacy and personalization of patient care.
“Harbour View Medical Center is a model of what health care can and should be — responsive, data-driven, and centered on the needs of our patients,” said Andy Spicknall, president of Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center. “We’re proud to bring this level of care and innovation to Suffolk and to expand our mission of providing good help to those in need.”
This expansion ensures that patients requiring emergency care can now receive inpatient services—including surgery—on-site, without the need to travel long distances or to another city. For more advanced needs, patients will continue to have access to the full Bon Secours Hampton Roads network.
In addition to inpatient and surgical services, the facility offers a wide range of specialty and diagnostic services, including:
- Women’s imaging and breast cancer screenings
- Orthopedic care and physical therapy
- Cancer radiation therapy
- Bariatrics, general surgery, colorectal and breast surgery, urology
- State-of-the-art robotic surgery for enhanced precision
This expansion will also generate more than 100 new jobs in the region and deepen Bon Secours’ long-standing presence in Hampton Roads, where it continues to invest in clinical excellence and community health.
“The expansion of Bon Secours in Suffolk through the new Harbour View Medical Center reflects our city’s growth and the increasing demand for high-quality services close to home,” said Suffolk Mayor Michael D. Duman. “This investment strengthens our local economy, creates new jobs, and reinforces Suffolk’s reputation as a thriving destination for innovation in both health care and business.”
