Overview

A cancer diagnosis is the last thing you want to hear from a doctor. Especially if it’s a specific type of cancer that shows little or no signs or symptoms. No matter what your diagnosis, Bon Secours is here for you with a care plan to ease your mind and improve your health, all from a team of cancer experts with your best life in mind.

Blood cancer (also known as hematologic cancer) makes it hard for your body to produce and use blood cells. This type of cancer, also called hematology, usually starts in your bone marrow (where blood cells are formed) and interrupts normal blood cell development with cancerous cells. These abnormal cells weaken your body so it’s harder to fight off germs or stop bleeding when you get injured. Blood cancer can affect any of the three types of blood cells in your body: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

There are three common types of blood cancer:

  • Leukemia is a cancer of blood-forming tissues that lower your body’s ability to fight infection.
  • Lymphoma is a cancer that affects the lymphatic system (the part of your body that removes excess fluids and produces white blood cells), which lowers your body’s ability to fight germs.
  • Myeloma affects plasma cells, which leaves you with a weakened immune system.

For many patients, a bone marrow transplant (or stem cell transplant) is the best chance for survival and living a healthy life after beating this terrible cancer.

If you’ve been diagnosed with a blood or bone marrow-related cancer, we can help.
