Robert C. Shwayder, MD
Over the last three decades, Dr. Shwayder has elevated the level of OB/GYN care on the Virginia Peninsula. After graduating from the University of Colorado and the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Dr. Shwayder completed his internship and residency at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Dr. Shwayder had the opportunity to participate in this country's first protocol laboratories in the research, development and implementation of OB/GYN ultrasounds, gynecological microsurgeries, OB/GYN soft tissue laser surgeries, major operative and advanced laparoscopies, and hysteroscopic surgeries. He further pursued post-residency sabbaticals and training to become credentialed in these procedures at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, laser research laboratories at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, and laser surgery laboratories at Portsmouth Naval Regional Medical Center. He has also been involved in studies at the medical schools of the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, Baylor, Vanderbilt and the University of Louisville, Kentucky.
With this extensive background and experience, Dr. Shwayder introduced OB/GYN ultrasound to the Hampton Roads region in 1978, gynecological microsurgery to Mary Immaculate Hospital in 1980, and laser soft tissue surgeries and major operative laparoscopy and hysteroscopy to the region in 1983.
Dedicated to offering the leading edge in OB/GYN care, Dr. Shwayder became certified in advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic operatives in 1990 by the governing board of these procedures, now the American Academy of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. Most recently, Dr. Shwayder was credentialed and certified in major Robotic da Vinci operative laparoscopic surgeries in 2008, through studies at the Bethesda Regional Medical Center and Riverside Regional Medical Center.
