Matthew J. Austin, MD, specializes in NeuroInterventional Surgery and is the medical director of the Bon Secours UVA NeuroInterventional Surgery practice at St. Mary's Hospital. Born and raised in southern California, Dr. Austin received most of his training in California before completing his Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology fellowship at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. In 2018, he joined the University of Virginia faculty in the Department of Radiology & Medical Imaging. His clinical interests include minimally invasive treatments for cerebral aneurysms, carotid artery stenosis, arteriovenous malformations/fistulas, acute ischemic stroke, pulsatile tinnitus, intracranial hypertension, CSF leak, and vertebral fractures. His research interests include clinical outcomes and novel device development in endovascular treatments of neurovascular disorders.
Dr. Austin is board certified in diagnostic radiology and Neuroradiology by the American Board of Radiology.
In his free time, Dr. Austin is actively involved in the Clarendon Foundation, an organization that supports underprivileged youth in Sri Lanka. He also enjoys the great outdoors, traveling, martial arts, tennis, triathlon training, and spending quality time with his dogs.
