Dr. Spencer is a board-certified general surgeon. He earned his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. He completed a surgical internship at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and a general surgery residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California.
Dr. Spencer is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and also a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is an experienced general and bariatric surgeon, who has worked at several different surgical practices in the Hampton Roads area. He has also held academic appointments as assistant professor of surgery at the F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland and Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. Prior to this he served 20 years in the U.S. Navy and served as staff surgeon and head of the division of laparoendoscopic and bariatric surgery at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.
