Bon Secours St. Francis Health System has been recognized as a “Best Hospital” for 2021 by U.S. News & World Report. Together, the health system’s two hospital campuses – St. Francis Eastside and St. Francis Downtown – were ranked 2nd in the state of South Carolina and first overall for the Greenville, S.C. area.

The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 32nd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.

For the 2020-21 rankings and ratings, seven new Procedures and Conditions ratings have been added, diversifying the portfolio to 17 services in all. The new ratings – covering heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, diabetes, kidney failure, hip fracture and back surgery (spinal fusion) – emphasize the importance of targeted research and care that provides patients and their doctors with data-driven decision support.

"This year's expanded report from U.S. News includes new ratings for important procedures and conditions to help patients, in consultation with their doctors, narrow down their choice of hospital based on the specific type of care they need," said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News & World Report.

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System earned high performing ratings for common adult procedure and conditions in 11 categories – abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, heart attack, diabetes, colon cancer surgery, kidney failure, stroke, back surgery (spinal fusion), hip and knee replacement, hip fracture, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These rating are recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes.

This recognition is proof that Bon Secours is living up to its mission of extending the compassionate ministry of Jesus by improving the health and well-being of our communities and bringing good help to those in need. It’s an honor for me to serve alongside all of our Greenville associates – the people who go above and beyond on a daily basis to ensure the best care possible in every respect. That commitment results in the outstanding care that can truly change the lives of our patients,” said Matt Caldwell, president of Bon Secours’ Greenville market.

The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.
