Overview

Your heart is a powerful muscle that powers your every move. When something feels off, you know it right away.

A heart rhythm disorder, also known as an arrhythmia, occurs if something interferes with the electrical impulses that power your heart. These symptoms can include:

  • A fluttering in your chest
  • A racing heartbeat (tachycardia)
  • A slow heartbeat (bradycardia)
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath

An arrhythmia doesn’t always mean you have heart disease, but you should get it checked right away.

Cardiac electrophysiology studies (EPS) are tests that help a cardiologist find the cause of an arrhythmia. Your doctor can perform an EPS using a catheter that’s inserted into one of the blood vessels leading to your heart, testing the electrical activity to find out where an irregular heartbeat is coming from. Once your doctor knows what’s causing the arrhythmia, they can discuss the best course of treatment with you, which could include medication, a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), cardiac ablation or other surgical options.
