forensic nursing

Forensic nurses provide healthcare services to crime victims. These health care professionals also collect evidence, help investigate suspected abuse and maintain the integrity of evidence. They also treat their patients with sensitivity and compassion.  Bon Secours Virginia has offered forensic nursing services since 1993. We now have seven forensic nurses on call 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week to assist women who experience:

  • Sexual abuse
  • Physical abuse
  • Domestic violence
  • Elder abuse

Our forensic nurses are trained to work with adults and children.

Our forensic nurses take a gentle, holistic and respectful approach to patients. The forensic unit is in the Medical Office building at St. Mary's Hospital to maintain the privacy and dignity of our patients. We also maintain a separate forensic evaluation area in the Pediatric Emergency Room of St. Mary's Hospital for our pediatric patients. Our staff can -- take a detailed incident history; conduct an exam and collect evidence; test for sexually transmitted diseases; administer prophylactic treatment; and provide pregnancy testing.  Based on exam results, a forensic nurse can help you get the right treatment and support. Assistance can include health services, follow up with investigative agencies and pediatricians, and expert court testimony.  Emphasizing continuity of care, our forensic nurses provide case management to their patients, maintaining the relationship created during intake.
