World-class surgeons utilize leading-edge technology with unmatched precision at the
Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute.

Robotic Heart Surgery

St. Mary’s Hospital is home to the most advanced Surgical Robotic system available today, the da Vinci S surgical system. It is an extremely powerful computer interface that allows the surgeon to perform delicate procedures with 3D magnified vision resulting in a new level of precision. All of this is then accomplished thru 8-12 mm ports between the ribs, thus avoiding the large sternal splitting incisions of traditional open heart surgery. This minimally invasive approach results in less trauma for the patients leading to shorter hospital stays, less pain, faster recovery times and rapid return to full activities.

Our surgeons have participated in the pioneering clinical trials that lead to this technologies approval by the FDA and we continue to work on procedure development to help extend the utilization of this exciting new technology to more patients. This wonderful new advance for heart surgery patients can be used for:

    •  Mitral valve repairs
    •  Totally Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass (TECAB)
    •  Atrial Septal defect (ASD) repairs
    •  Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) repairs
    •  Biventricular pacing lead placement for congestive heart failure
    •  Pericardial windows
    •  Totally endoscopic atrial fibrillation ablation
