Surgery for Congestive Heart Failure

Congestive Heart Failure is a weakness of the heart muscle resulting in reduced pumping ability and consequently poor blood flow to vital organs. In many cases it also causes a build up of fluid in the lungs leading to shortness of breath and swelling of the lower extremities. A number of different conditions including coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease can lead to heart failure. Other diseases including viral infections can also lead to significant weakening of the heart. Many cases of heart failure can be treated with standard procedures like bypass surgery (CABG) or valve repair surgery. However in some circumstances the severity of the heart weakness requires other measures like placement of artificial assist pumps (LVAD) or heart transplants. Our surgeons have a long experience in Heart Transplantation and have implanted multiple different LVAD devices including the Abiomed BVS system, Thoratec LVAD, HeartMate XVE, and DeBakey MicroMed pumps.
