World-class surgeons utilize leading-edge technology with unmatched precision at the
Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute. Aortic Aneurysm Repair An aortic aneurysm is an abnormal enlargement or bulging of the aorta (the main blood vessel) due to a weakness in the vessel wall. Aneurysms can grow larger with time and press on other structures or potentially rupture. When they reach a certain size, multiple studies have shown that the risk of rupture increases and the aneurysm should be removed. Our surgeons are skill at treating all types of aneurysms of the heart and great vessels. Minimally invasive surgical approaches are possible for certain types of aneurysms. The surgeons at Bon Secours Richmond performed the first endovascular repairs of both abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms. This technique involves threading a wire and stent graft thru the vessels via a small groin incision to repair the aneurysm. The result is a hospital stay and recovery a fraction of that required for open repairs. |
