

Bon Secours Richmond Health System's Pharmacy Practice Residency is a 12-month postgraduate training program designed to help new pharmacists gain confidence and competence in the health system setting. This professional practice learning experience will emphasize the development of the knowledge and skills needed to pursue rational drug therapy. The goals, objectives, and evaluation processes are consistent with those established by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) for pharmacy practice residency programs.
Residents receive training and develop competence in acute patient care, medication safety, drug information, drug-use policy development, and practice management. Residents serve as an integral part of our ongoing staff development program and will present lectures to and serve as mentors for our decentralized staff pharmacists. Residents will also precept Doctor of Pharmacy candidates from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy and are given the opportunity to present didactic lectures at the university. Each resident will complete a major project and present the results at the annual Eastern States Residency Conference.
Bon Secours Richmond Pharmacy Practice Residency Program enrolls two residents yearly. The application deadline is January 8, 2010. Applications may be accepted after this date at the hospital's discretion if the class is not full.

Residents are given numerous opportunities to participate in drug therapy management of diverse patient populations. In order to provide training in all aspects of contemporary pharmacy practice, the resident shall complete organized learning experiences. Experential teaching is integrated into the resident practice model. Early in the program, the resident will observe faculty clerkship preceptors and become integrated into various aspects of clerkship teaching. At the end of the residency program, residents have the opportunity to independently precept at least two clerkship students.
The goal of the pharmacy residency program is to gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities necessary to independently and competently optimize pharmacotherapy outcomes through direct patient care and pharmacy practice management. The resident is considered a responsible adult and is expected to have ethical and professional conduct at all times. Guidelines governing expected behavior are outlined in the Resident Handbook. The resident is responsible to practice within their scope of licensure in accordance with approved policies, procedures and protocols.
The resident is required to carry professional liability insurance in order to go into the clinical area. The resident pays an annual premium for the amount of coverage which can be purchased through the American Pharmacists Association (APhA).
