Dr. J. Michael Simpson specializes in the treatment of numerous pathologic conditions affecting the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, including spinal stenosis, scoliosis and other deformities, trauma, infections and tumors. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio. After completing his internship and residency, he was awarded a Spine fellowship at the Rothman Institute and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. This fellowship offered him the unique opportunity to receive both orthopaedic and neurosurgical training.

Dr. Simpson has over 20 years of extensive spine experience and currently performs between 500-600 surgeries a year. He has operated on over 10,000 patients in his career. Each patient is different, so his goal is to develop an individualized treatment plan that takes into consideration the patient’s needs, expectations and general health. The majority of his patients will not require surgery and can benefit from nonsurgical treatments.

Dr. Simpson has a special interest in minimally invasive techniques, degenerative conditions, spinal deformities, and patients who have had previous surgeries. His training in orthopaedics and neurosurgery allows him to combine his expertise of both specialty fields in treating complex spinal disorders. He has an appreciation of neurological anatomy and proper decompressive techniques, along with complete comprehension of spinal structure and biomechanics.

Dr. Simpson is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the North American Spine Society. He is also a member of the Cervical Spine Research Society, which is a special society for a select number of surgeons in the world. He is actively engaged in research and the development of various spinal instrumentation implants. Dr. Simpson believes that patient expectations have changed over the course of the last few decades. Many of his elderly patients now have a stronger desire to remain active and stay independent. This change in attitude has encouraged him to refine surgical techniques and instrumentation to deal with the complex spine issues that can accompany the “aging spine.”

Dr. Simpson has co-authored two textbooks related to spinal surgery: Surgery of Spine Trauma and Surgery of the Cervical Spine with his best friend and associate, Dr. Howard An at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He has also authored over 20 articles related to orthopaedic and spine conditions and contributed to several chapters in various textbooks related to spine surgery. He holds the honor of being named one of Richmond magazine’s “Top Docs” numerous times, most recently in 2013 for Spine Surgery.

Dr. Simpson grew up in La Plata, Md. He loved playing baseball as a child and played on his high school and college baseball teams. In his free time, Dr. Simpson enjoys spending time with his four daughters, as well as boating, fishing and woodworking.
