Tommy John surgery
Tommy John Surgery is named for the first professional athlete to undergo this proceedure successfully. The medical term for this operation is ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction. Located inside the elbow joint, this ligament can be torn by overuse and repetitive stress. Athletes, especially baseball pitchers, often suffer damage to the ulnar collateral ligament. Reconstruction of it involves grafting, using a tendon. This tendon may come from the patient or an organ donor. Recovery rates are excellent for this surgery, ranging from 85 to 90 percent. Physical therapy is necessary to ensure optimum use of the elbow following an operation.
