nervous system health

A neurological condition can change significantly the lives of patients and families. Fortunately, The Neurosciences Institute at Bon Secours Virginia offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment for patients with these disorders. We also know the importance of compassion in addressing a woman’s unique needs. Our talented multidisciplinary team will work closely with you and your loved ones at every step of care. Our specialists have expertise in a wide range of conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, and the peripheral and sympathetic nervous systems. Specifically, we often deal with strokes, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, and migraine headaches.

Strokes are one of the most common conditions we treat. They occur when a blockage or bleeding interrupts blood flow to the brain. Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States and occurs more often in women. In addition, 25 percent of strokes affect women below age 65 -- often during the post-partum period. Patients can reduce the chance of stroke by living a healthy lifestyle -- eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking.  Our counselors and nutritionists can work with you to make changes. We also have rehabilitation programs in partnership with Sheltering Arms at several locations.

Women also have a slightly higher risk for brain tumors. To address them, we provide screening, removal, radiation, and chemotherapy services in our state-of-the-art facility -- the Cullather Brain Tumor & Quality of Life Center. The center provides diagnosis and treatment, and helps families adjust to a “new normal". We also offer support in many areas, including spiritual and emotional issues, financial concerns, and care-giving. We are exploring the addition of complementary and alternative medicine offerings. Because women often head families and drive healthcare decisions, a neurological diagnosis affects families in many ways. Our counselors, nurses, and social workers can provide information and emotional support as you undergo care. In all we do, we strive to provide patient-centered care – a fact reflected in our high patient satisfaction scores and patient assessments.
