If you or your baby need extra care, our perinatologists are the people to turn to. Also known as Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists, these professionals specialize in reducing the risk of complications before, during, and after childbirth. Our team is dedicated, highly skilled and comprised of physicians, nurses and ultrasound technicians. They have lots of experience with thousands of complex pregnancies. And, the health of you and your baby are their top priority. Perinatologists provide comprehensive prenatal testing, evaluation and treatment of common pregnancy conditions, like high blood pressure and gestational diabetes. Our team will work with you to determine risks and complications unique to your situation and history, and how they may affect your child. We may order blood tests as an initial step. Some conditions, like gestational diabetes, are easily managed by lifestyle changes. So, we may suggest dietary counseling with a nutritionist, instruction on insulin administration or other options. We’ll collaborate with your primary care physician and will call on other experts, if needed. If you have a close relative -- a parent or sibling – with genetic conditions, please let us know. Our counselors are happy to discuss these issues in depth. They can explain conditions, the value and risks of testing, the chance of passing a trait on to your child, and the emotional repercussions. Bon Secours Virginia now offers perinatal transport service. If you have a complication – and we offer a higher level of care at another one of our hospitals – we’ll take you there. We’re one of the nation’s few institutions to do this. We take a holistic approach to family, and your family members are welcome to travel with you.
