Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital Announces Partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond
World-renowned nonprofit to support in-hospital Ronald McDonald family rooms and a pediatric wing at the new St. Mary’s Guest House
(Sept. 15, 2012)
Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond are teaming up to bring world-class comfort to the families of pediatric patients at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond, which has supported families of children receiving medical treatment away from home for decades, has committed a gift of $75,000 to build two dedicated sleeping rooms and a respite lounge on the fifth floor at St. Mary’s. The rooms will allow the families of patients to take a moment away to rest and recharge before returning to their children’s bedsides.
In addition, St. Mary’s is one step closer to breaking ground on a new guest house for patients’ families, thanks to a gift of $175,000 from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond. This gift will establish a pediatrics wing at the St. Mary’s Guest House. Focusing on the comfort of young patients’ families, the gift will allow St. Mary’s to create three sleeping rooms and a playroom dedicated to families of pediatric patients.
“We are profoundly grateful to Ronald McDonald House Charities for these generous gifts,” said Toni R. Ardabell, CEO of Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. “It is invaluable not only to have financial support from Ronald McDonald House Charities, but also their expertise in providing a home away from home for patient families.”
“RMHC is honored to be a part of the heroic efforts of Bon Secours’ pediatric health care providers,” said Derek W.H. Kung, president of the board of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond, VA, Inc. “We are proud to be teaming up with an organization and be part of a Richmond community that feels so passionately about the health and well-being of sick children and their families.”
“Bon Secours is an outstanding community partner,” said Susan Durlak, owner/operator of Richmond McDonald restaurants. “We believe that our organizational values are aligned, and we are pleased to collaborate on programs that bring comfort and care to sick children and their families.”
In addition to the financial gifts, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond will provide expertise and additional volunteers for Bon Secours’ efforts to provide comfort and care to families of St. Mary’s pediatric patients. Bon Secours made the announcement today at St. Mary’s Community Day, a family-friendly gathering of friends and neighbors on the hospital campus.
As St. Mary’s is able to offer more advanced treatments and therapies, an increasing number of patients are coming from a distance that requires short-term and extended overnight stays. An important outcome of the St. Mary’s charrette community-planning session, the new guest house will offer families a quiet place to relax and recharge with 14 guest rooms, two family suites and common areas. The Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation has raised $2.3 million toward their $3 million goal for construction of the guest house, which is set to open its doors in late fall 2013. learn more
