Bon Secours Richmond Health System and Coventry Health Care Provide Health Insurance Marketplace Consumers Innovation, Accessibility

Oct. 18, 2013 – Bon Secours Richmond Health System has collaborated with Coventry Health Care, an Aetna company, to become the provider of choice for Carelink from Coventry, the insurer’s Virginia Health Insurance Marketplace offering. Carelink provides Richmond-area consumers who purchase health care insurance in the Health Insurance Marketplace insurance plans with the most cost effective premiums available.

“Virginians looking to purchase health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace should receive the best care for their dollar,” said Peter Bernard, chief executive officer, Bon Secours Virginia. “Bon Secours is proud to be a part of Coventry’s Carelink product that offers the most affordable, cost effective and innovative plans on the Richmond-area marketplace.”

Coventry’s Carelink is a two-tiered plan that opens access to all Richmond-area hospital providers, giving consumers options on how and where to spend their health care-related dollars. However, Bon Secours is Carelink’s preferred provider at its tier one level, where consumers will have access to the Bon Secours Richmond network of hospitals, facilities and affiliated physicians at the plan’s lowest out-of-pocket costs.

Bernard continued, “We want people in our communities to have access to affordable, quality health care and the Health Insurance Marketplace has provided that opportunity for many people. In this new way of purchasing health insurance, individuals have a range of offerings to choose from, which is good for consumer choice.”

Coventry’s open access approach aligned with Bon Secours’ belief that patients should have as many options available as possible when it comes to choosing a provider. Bon Secours is also participating in the open access networks of Aetna’s and Optima Health’s Health Insurance Marketplace plans.

Bernard also attributes Coventry’s innovative plan design, such as its emphasis on patient centered medical home care, as fully compatible with Bon Secours’ approach to care. A patient centered medical home is a team-based approach that proactively addresses a patient’s individualized needs as a means to improve a population’s health.  Patient centered medical home models use nurse navigators to help coordinate patient care throughout the whole experience of a patient’s medical needs, from preventative care to, should the occasion arise, the time that they leave the hospital, to managing follow-up visits, to ensuring medications are taken correctly – all in an effort to improve overall health and reduce a patient’s reliance on emergency care.

“Emphasizing preventive care coverage and using the patient centered medical home model should minimize episodic patient care and are important tools for shifting the focus from reacting to incidents of illness to proactively treating wellness. That is good news for the patient from a medical and an economic perspective” said Bernard. “As a health care provider, the more proactively we can deliver patient care and reduce their likelihood of reentering the system, the more successful we will be with patient outcomes. This is not just a benefit to the patient, but ultimately reduces the overall costs of health care.”

Consumers who purchase Carelink will have access to Bon Secours’ four Richmond-area hospitals: St. Mary’s Hospital, Memorial Regional Medical Center, Richmond Community Hospital, and St. Francis Medical Center.

Open enrollment in Virginia’s Health Insurance Marketplace runs from Oct. 1, 2013, through Mar. 31, 2014, and coverage can begin as early as Jan. 1. 2014.

Insurance products that are available in the Health Insurance Marketplace are aimed primarily at the individual market and they can be, and in many cases are, different than what is available to employees that have their coverage sponsored by their employer. Bon Secours remains an in-network provider in many of the insurance plans offered outside the new Health Insurance Marketplace that it has always participated in.
