Bon Secours Virginia Among Nation’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare
Nov. 4, 2013 –Bon Secours Virginia Health System has earned a top 50 ranking as No. 43 on Modern Healthcare’s annual “Best Places to Work in Healthcare” list. This is the second consecutive year the publication has recognized Bon Secours Virginia in their nationally ranked list of 100 best employers in the health care industry.
”To be listed as one of the best places to work in health care is a testament to our dedicated employees and the culture they have created,” said Peter J. Bernard, chief executive officer, Bon Secours Virginia. “I am proud of the holistic approach our organization takes to support our employees, whether they are full time or part-time, in both their professional and personal lives.” Bon Secours Virginia climbed 25 spots in the sixth annual “Best Places to Work in Healthcare” list from its previous rank of 68 in 2012. “To break into the top 50 out of hundreds of thousands of companies in the health care industry demonstrates that our culture and employee programs are heading in the right direction,” Bernard continued.
The survey’s methodology combines employer data in the areas of company policies and practices, benefits, and demographics with an in-depth employee questionnaire that covers such things as company culture, role satisfaction, relationship with supervisor, and training and development. Employee response to the survey is weighted heavily in a company’s assessment with a minimum response rate of 40 percent with greater numbers reflecting more positively on the organization; Bon Secours Virginia saw a 65 percent response rate.
Companies’ results are categorized according to eight core focus areas: leadership and planning, corporate culture and communications, role satisfaction, work environment, relationship with supervisor, training and development, pay and benefits, and overall engagement. Companies are assessed based on their strengths and opportunities in each of the eight categories, which are then compared to benchmarks to determine the rankings.
Bon Secours Virginia includes seven hospitals across the Commonwealth and employs about 12,000 people. It is the fourth largest and only faith-based health system in Virginia. In Central Virginia, the not-for-profit health system includes St. Mary’s Hospital, Memorial Regional Medical Center, Richmond Community Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center.
