Bon Secours Richmond Ranked Best Place To Work In Healthcare

Only Health System in Virginia Named to Prestigious, National List

RICHMOND, Va. (Sept. 20, 2009) – The Bon Secours Richmond Health System earned a spot on Modern Healthcare’s highly respected national listing of the 100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare for 2009. In beating out nearly 220 other health organizations across the country, Bon Secours Richmond also is the sole Virginia representation on Modern Healthcare’s second annual listing.

Bernard, CEO of Bon Secours Virginia, which is comprised of both Bon Secours Richmond and Bon Secours Hampton Roads. “During the past five years, Bon Secours Richmond has made significant, measurable improvements in its healthcare delivery, patient services and employee engagement. Bon Secours Richmond was considered a leading employer by Modern Healthcare for the following programs and policies including:

To earn a place on Modern Healthcare’s list, Bon Secours Richmond had to complete a lengthy application of nearly 80 questions, including seven probing essay questions. In addition, Modern Healthcare conducted a random survey of employees to verify that the information from the company was indeed known and appreciated by the workforce. To qualify for the list, Bon Secours had to score well on both the application and the survey.

“Since employees provide their insights for this award application, the honor is even more special knowing that the workforce we strive so hard to support and develop indeed feels that we are being successful in those endeavors,” Bernard added.

Modern Healthcare conducts the annual program to recognize outstanding employers in the healthcare industry on a national level. From economic development to employee retention, being named one of the Best Places to Work in Healthcare benefits individuals, organizations and the healthcare industry.

In 2009, 317 healthcare companies vied for the 100 positions on Modern Healthcare’s workplace listing – an increase of 34 percent (or 80 companies) over 2008. Modern Healthcare will reveal the specific ranking of the Best Places to Work in Healthcare, from 1 to 100, in a special supplement to be published Oct. 26. The supplement also will recognize the top places to work by industry segment (provider, payer and vendor) and by number of employees, and will profile some of the recipients.

Methodology:
The program collected information from both the employer and employees and was open to all companies (providers, suppliers, payers, associations, etc.) with at least 25 employees. Employers completed a survey detailing company policies, practices, benefits and demographics. Employees were asked an in-depth set of questions that resulted in an analysis in eight core areas:
  • leadership and planning
  • culture and communications
  • role satisfaction
  • working environment
  • relationship with supervisor
  • training and development
  • pay and benefits
  • overall satisfaction
