Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital Named to Top 100 Lists
Hospital is among elite in both cardiac and women’s health programs
Jan. 6, 2014 – Becker’s Hospital Review, a monthly publication covering business and legal news and analysis about hospitals and health systems, announced St. Mary’s Hospital has been named to their Top 100 Hospitals with Great Heart Programs and their Top 100 Hospitals with Great Women’s Health Programs.
Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital is under the direction of chief executive officer Toni R. Ardabell, and has been ranked by HealthGrades for being among the top five percent in the nation for emergency medicine, critical care, stroke, gastrointestinal care, and prostatectomy. The Joint Commission accredits St. Mary’s for having centers of excellence in heart failure, heart attack, ventricular assist device, hip and knee joint replacement and primary stroke care. St. Mary’s is also a center of excellence for surgical weight loss surgery and breast imaging and is designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the American College of Surgeons.
I am so proud of our cardiac and women’s services programs for this recognition from Becker’s,” said Ardabell. “Our strategic and operational goals focus on attaining this level of excellence, so I am happy for every member of our team who has contributed to St. Mary’s being among the most elite in the nation.”
The criteria for making the list of Top 100 Heart Programs includes quality of care, clinical awards and research contributions to cardiovascular care. As noted in Becker’s report, “The Bon Secours Heart and Vascular Institute was the first in the world to offer digital cardiac imaging through the Innova 2000, the all-digital X-ray cardiovascular imaging system. Bon Secours St. Mary's has been recognized by the American College of Cardiology Foundation and is a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center.”
“I know I speak for all of my colleagues at Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute that we are honored to make such a prestigious list,” said Marc R. Katz, M.D., chief medical officer of Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute and head of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at Bon Secours Richmond Health System. “Achieving the highest standards of excellence in medical outcomes and patient care is what we strive for daily, in all of our facilities, so it is rewarding for Becker’s to recognize us among the top heart programs in the country.”
St. Mary’s was selected for the Top 100 Hospitals with Great Women’s Health Programs based on clinical excellence, quality care and women's health awards in the areas of gynecology, obstetrics, reproductive medicine and other women’s health needs.
Regarding their selection of St. Mary’s Hospital’s Women’s Services, Becker’s states, “Its services for women include digital mammography, neonatology and perinatology. It also offers classes for expectant mothers, such as Lamaze and pre- and post-birth yoga as well as a lactation center. St. Mary's includes a pediatric neonatal intensive care unit and board-certified pediatric emergency physicians. The hospital has been awarded Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.”
“There are many facets to women’s health, so to be recognized by Becker’s as a top program in all the phases of a woman’s life for which she needs medical care is quite a distinction for our program,” said Mary Anne Graf, vice president Women’s Services, Bon Secours Virginia. “It is a team effort among our doctors, surgeons, nurses, midwives and teaching staff to hold ourselves to the best practices for our respective fields. I am so proud of every member of our team for making this list.”
In making the Top 100 Hospitals lists for both cardiology and women’s health programs, St. Mary’s Hospital is among the most distinguished hospitals in the nation, such as the Cleveland Clinic, the Mayo Clinic, Duke University Medical Center, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Hospitals cannot pay or apply to be included on the list.
