Bon Secours Receives Award for Electronic Medical Records Implementation

Four Richmond area hospitals attain highest level of electronic medical records adoption

Jan. 3, 2014 – HIMSS Analytics, the leading organization representing health information management services and a subsidiary of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, announced that all four Bon Secours hospitals in the Greater Richmond area have attained the Stage 7 Award of the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM). Hospitals and health systems work to complete the eight stages (0-7) of implementation and utilization of information technology applications with the goal of reaching Stage 7, where paper charts are no longer used. The four hospitals that achieved Stage 7 include: Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, Richmond Community Hospital in Richmond, St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian and St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond.

By achieving all the steps necessary toward a paperless environment, Bon Secours has both a competitive and quality advantage over other health systems, as they support the information exchange and immediate delivery of patient data to improve process performance, quality of care and patient safety.

Stage 7 Award recipients share patient clinical information electronically with all entities within their entire health information exchange network, while also using data warehousing and mining techniques to capture and analyze care data to perfect, advance and institute operational, financial and quality improvements.

In addition to this award for Bon Secours’ four Richmond hospitals, 31 Bon Secours ambulatory clinics also earned the Stage 7 Ambulatory Award.

“Stage 7 certification in our Richmond hospitals, coupled with this designation for our ambulatory sites, highlights our successful investment in information technology to transform health delivery,” stated Peter Bernard, CEO, Bon Secours Virginia Health System. “Our ‘one patient, one record’ approach supports our goals for high quality care and patient safety in the communities we serve.”

To be considered for the Stage 7 Award, hospitals must participate in the HIMSS Analytics Annual Study for their EMRAM score. Detailed information technology data is collected for the study, and the implementation and adoption of electronic medical records applications is tracked through each stage of the EMR Adoption Model. Validation of Stage 6 is completed through a phone interview. The validation process to achieve Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics along with former or current chief information officers, to ensure an unbiased evaluation. Bon Secours will be recognized at the 2014 Annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition on Feb. 24-26 in Orlando, Florida.

“With their deployed common architectural solution for both acute care and ambulatory care, Bon Secours has begun to drive significant quality improvements and efficiencies through their IT investments, “ said John Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, executive vice president, HIMSS Analytics. “A continuous record is available for both inpatient and ambulatory care, reducing redundancies and vastly improving the patient experience. With their inpatient solutions, the Virginia Bon Secours hospitals have achieved the state-of-the-art standard in safe medication practices. This is truly where the industry is heading and Bon Secours has established itself as a leader.”
