Building healthier communities is at the core of all of Bon Secours' community outreach efforts.

In the tradition of its founding sisters, Bon Secours is committed to bringing good help to those in need. Click on one of the seven topics listed below and discover the breadth of Bon Secours community health efforts in partnership with many health-related organizations and activities throughout the community.


Bon Secours supports healthcare and social justice issues throughout the year and when the General Assembly and Congress are in session.

Care-A-Vans: Offers immunizations and free medical services to adults and children who have no health insurance through the use of two mobile health clinics that visit several Richmond neighborhoods. Please call (804) 545-1932 or (804) 359-WELL[9355].

CARMA (Controlling Asthma in the Richmond Metropolitan Community): Works to improve the quality of life for children with asthma. In 2009 Bon Secours assumed full administrative and financial responsiblity for CARMA. This program now includes a Care Coordination component for children 2-18 years of age who are seen in the emergency room or hospitalized for asthma exacerbation. Please call (804) 213-0914.

Children's Health Insurance: Enrolls eligible applicants in the State Children's Health Insurance Program (called FAMIS in Virginia). Please call (804) 359-WELL[9355].

For Ladies Only: Provides a mentoring program to help middle school girls develop positive self-esteem and decision-making abilities. Please call (804) 595-1407.

Noah's Children: Serves as the first and only pediatric hospice and palliative care program in Central Virginia ensuring comprehensive, compassionate care at the most difficult time for a family by addressing physical, emotional, social, spiritual and practical needs. Please call (804) 355-7100.

Nutrition: A registered dietician provides nutrition education for uninsured patients of the Care-A-Vans and other community outreach programs. The dietician offers one-on-one counseling, as well as group classes regarding nutrition information on chronic diseases such as diabetes (high sugar), high blood pressure, weight loss, healthy eating and others. Reach Out and Read: A national program that encourages low-income parents to read to their children by providing a free book to children ages 6 months to 5 years who visit the Care A Vans and some of our hospital Emergency Departments. Please call (804) 545-1937.

Safe Harbor: Offers the Richmond community's only program for victims of domestic violence including a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, community counseling and support groups, a children’s program, court advocacy and education presentations Please call the 24-hour hotline at (804) 287-7877 or during regular business hours, please call (804) 249-9470.

Safe Kids: Provides education to adults and children on fire safety, car safety, home safety, bike and pedestrian safety to prevent accidental childhood injury. Please call (804) 213-0918.

Cross-Cultural Services: Promotes diversity by offering language services (interpretation and document translation), diversity education (cultural competence, interpreter training, ESOL, Spanish and other languages) and support groups for those in cultural transition. Cultural Transition Support Groups: Provide support to persons experiencing cultural transition. Groups meet Tuesdays/Thursdays at selected Care-A-Van sites and are conducted by bilingual staff in the language appropriate to the needs of the group. Contact Ana Buckman at (804) 545-1938.

Faith Community Services is a network that offers opportunities for spiritual growth, mentoring, education, and community resources to faith community nurses (parish nurses), other allied health professionals, lay health ministers and congregations.

The program:

  • Trains registered nurses using the International Parish Nurse Resource Center curriculum.
  • Trains lay health ministers and church leaders in health and wellness concepts to enable congregations in the development of a health ministry.
  • Provides spiritual, supportive one-on-one consultation, theological reflections, devotions and prayers.
  • Assists with individual and congregational health assessments and development of health/wellness programs.
  • Acts as a referral resource to health and community agencies.
  • Links health ministers with other ministries; local, state and national organizations and agencies, and program opportunities.

In addition, Faith Community Services supports the following chronic disease management programs:

  • American Diabetes Association Chose to Live Program: Offers knowledge and skills for those who have or at risk for diabetes.
  • Arthritis Foundation Arthritis Self Help Program: Offers knowledge and skills needed to better manage arthritis.
  • JOY Program: Offers a comprehensive cardiovascular risk-reduction program focusing on nutrition and physical activity for Central Virginia’s African-American faith community.

CareCard: The CareCard is provided to patients who qualify for Bon Secours’ Financial Assistance Plan and allows patients to access our hospital services with ease and dignity.

Financial Assistance Program: Aids uninsured patients who do not qualify for government-sponsored health insurance and who communicate their inability to pay for their medical care. (See also the entry for "CareCard.")

Housing Partnerships: Improves the quality of living conditions for poor people. Bon Secours employees have constructed two new homes in partnership with Interfaith Housing, Habitat for Humanity, and other housing organizations.

Advocacy and Public Policy: Lobbying for healthcare and social justice issues during the annual session of Virginia’s General Assembly.

Community Partnerships Initiative: Provides funds for organizations wishing to join with Bon Secours in building healthier communities.

Safe Harbor: Offers the Richmond community’s only program for victims of domestic violence including a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, community counseling and support groups, a children’s program, court advocacy and education presentations.

Safe Landings: Connects volunteers to people of all ages as they recuperate at home, from new moms with special challenges to seniors who need an extra hand in regaining and maintaining their independence.

Launched in 1982, the Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation is the community outreach, charitable arm of Bon Secours Richmond. Dependent on the goodwill and generosity of donors and volunteers, the Foundation has been tremendously successful in extending quality healthcare to an ever-increasing number of needing people in the Richmond community.

Services:

  • Provides free shots, school physicals and vital screenings for young children through the Care-A-Vans mobile health clinics
  • Teaches lifesaving asthma skills and strategies through CARMA
  • Offers Central Virginia’s only pediatric hospice program through Noah's Children
  • Provides financial crisis assistance to hospital patients who need emergency funds for treatments, medications, infusions, and food

Every Woman's Life is a grant funded by the Va. Dept of Health through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for uninsured/underinsured women ages 40-64 who meet certain financial criteria. Call (804) 359-WELL[9355] for more information.

Hospice & Palliative Care: Offers palliative care, consultation, bereavement care and grief support groups for patients and their families. Please call (804) 627-5360.

JOY Program: Offers a comprehensive cardiovascular risk-reduction program focusing on nutrition and physical activity for Central Virginia's African-American faith community. Please call 804-627-5010.

ROAM (Rural Outreach and Access to Medicine): Focuses on rural areas surrounding the Richmond metropolitan areas, especially east and north of Hanover County. Provides preventive health education, health screenings and care to rural populations. Please call 764-7650.

Spiritual Care/Spirituality: Offers confidential counseling, assists with advance medical directives and referrals to faith resources, and prays with patients and families. Chaplains are always on call.

Ethics: Services include clinical ethics consultation; clinical ethic rounds; ethics education (system wide, hospital-based, unit-based, community-based); policy review and development; and organizational discernment for strategic decision-making.

Healing Voices Support Group: For parents who have experienced the death of a baby due to a miscarriage, stillbirth, infant loss or SIDS. Meetings are free and open to the community, and registration is not required. Meetings are held the 4th Tuesday of the month from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at St. Francis Medical Center ((804) 597-7437), and the 3rd Thursday of the month from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Memorial Regional Medical Center ((804) 764-7984).
