The Working Mother Best Companies for Hourly Workers survey honors companies dedicated to creating and implementing best practices in supporting their hourly workforce with benefits; training, development and advancement programs; child care; flexibility programs; paid time off; and more.

"We are honored to be placed in the Top 100 list for another year, bringing Bon Secours more than a decade of recognition," said Peter J. Bernard, Chief Executive Officer for Bon Secours Virginia Health System. "This honor resonates throughout our health system. Our employees understand the need for quality, compassionate care and our programs help make it possible for them to balance caring for others while caring for themselves."

The Gallup Great Workplace Award recognizes the best-performing workforces in the world. Bon Secours is the only Virginia organization and one of only 25 organizations world-wide to receive it.

In 2010, Bon Secours Richmond was ranked No. 8 by SDI on its Top 100 Integrated Healthcare Networks national listing. Healthcare networks are recognized based upon their performance level and degree of integration. SDI analyzes the patient experience, measures health care systems relative to performance, and integrates and warehouses information assets.

Bon Secours Richmond Health System has been recognized for business effectiveness in workplace flexibility with the Alfred P. Sloan award.

"Flexibility is an extension of compassion. Our employees must be flexible in working with our patients, and we aim to be accommodating to them, in return."

The NAFE award was created in 2001 for measuring and rewarding companies that advance women.

Award recognizes organizations that adhere to the 10 Characteristics of Companies That Care. Bon Secours was recognized for a work environment founded on dignity and respect for all employees. Bon Secours cultivates the full potential of all employees.

Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital has received the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence in several categories. The award recognizes the best 5 percent of hospitals in the country for clinical excellence by HealthGrades, the leading independent health care ratings company providing ratings and profiles of hospitals, nursing homes and physicians. Awardees must have star ratings in at least 19 of 26 procedures and diagnoses using national Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data for Medicare-covered inpatient discharges in the United States. Hospitals with outcomes that are above average to a statistically significant degree receive a five-star rating. In 2009, Mary Immaculate Hospital was recognized for the following achievements:

  • Five-Star Rated for Total Knee Replacement
  • Five-Star Rated for Joint Replacement
  • Ranked 8th in VA for Overall Orthopaedic Services
  • Ranked 6th in VA for Joint Replacement
  • Ranked 8th in VA for Spine Surgery

The award recognizes Bon Secours Richmond's involvement in community outreach health programs and services that focus on building healthier futures for children and families.

For the third year in a row, Bon Secours Richmond was given the platinum award by the American Heart Association (AHA) as a Start! Fit-Friendly Company in 2010. The AHA began the Start! program to encourage companies to promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle for their employees.

The Bon Secours Richmond Health System earned a spot on Modern Healthcare's highly respected national listing of the 100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare for 2009. In beating out nearly 220 other health organizations across the country, Bon Secours Richmond also is the sole Virginia representation on Modern Healthcare's second annual listing.

Companies that have successfully built comprehensive worksite wellness initiatives and are demonstrating and documenting concrete outcomes related to behavior change, cost effectiveness and return on investment are recognized as America's Healthiest Companies.

Judges noted Bon Secours Richmond for its strategic efforts at improving its workplace culture by cultivating engaged employees who then reap positive outcomes for patients and the community.

Bon Secours Richmond also received awards for having the area’s Best Recruitment, Engagement and Retention Practices for the second consecutive year and the national Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility for the fifth straight year.

Blue Distinction is a designation given by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to health care facilities, typically hospitals that have demonstrated expertise in the delivery of quality health care. At the core of the Blue Distinction program are the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care facilities that are recognized for their distinguished care in specific areas. The designation is based on rigorous, clinically meaningful measures established in collaboration with recommendations by physicians and medical organizations. Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center has been recognized with a five-star rating for clinical excellence in bariatric surgery from HealthGrades, the leading independent health care ratings company providing ratings and profiles of hospitals, nursing homes and physicians. Maryview is one of 93 hospitals nationally to receive this distinction, which also places the hospital in the top 5 percent in the nation for bariatric surgery (includes gastric bypass and laparoscopic procedures). Maryview is also distinguished as Top Hospital in Virginia for Bariatric Surgery.
