Classroom Programs
Critical to the success of educational initiatives, such as the two programs described next, is the ongoing support and commitment of the organization and the managers in whose departments employees work.
Work schedules are accommodated to permit scheduling class time. Education and Development offers ongoing support through oversight of all programs to include class design, curriculum and evaluation.
School-At-Work
One popular program with undeniable results is School-At-Work, a 32-week organized study of 13 modules that prepares entry-level employees for more advanced studies and a career in healthcare.
The first half focuses on improving basic skills in reading, writing and overall effective workplace communications. Then participants address areas germane to healthcare, including medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, medical ethics, math in the workplace, organizational skills and stress management.
Graduates routinely move up within the organization, and many pursue nursing and other medical degrees. The program coach encourages participants throughout the 32 weeks and guides them in identifying career goals and subsequently advanced placement opportunities.
English as a Second or Other Language
English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL) is another career development opportunity. Employees whose first language is not English participate in a 10-week on-site course of instruction, for three hours per week (30-hour semester).
Approximately 1-2 percent of Bon Secours employees speak English as a second or other language.
The class targets beginning to intermediate level skill development in listening, speaking, reading, and pronunciation—with some focus on writing. It provides an opportunity to strengthen vocabulary and to practice spelling. Workplace skill-building and American culture is also featured.
The program is offered in sequential segments that build upon one another. A full year meets for 120 hours, but participants can enroll at the beginning of any segment.
Community College Partnership
Bon Secours Virginia partners with the Community College Workforce Alliance to design, develop and deliver the program. The Richmond, Virginia-based Community College Workforce Alliance customizes a variety of services to improve employee performance.
