Children's Services
Pediatric Hematology and Oncology

Pediatric Hematology is the branch of medicine that diagnoses and treats blood disorders in infants, children and adolescents. The specialist is called a Pediatric Hematologist.

Pediatric Hematologists are experts in:

  • Anemia
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Hemophilia
  • Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura

In addition to treating blood disorders, Pediatric Hematologists work closely with Pediatric Oncologists to treat cancer in children. Some Pediatric Oncologists are trained in both oncology and hematology.

Pediatric Oncology is the branch of medicine that deals with cancer in infants, children and adolescents. The specialist is called a Pediatric Oncologist. Pediatric Oncologists treat many different types of cancers, including:

  • Brain tumors
  • Central nervous system tumors
  • Hodgkin's disease
  • Leukemia
  • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
  • Wilm's tumor

When your child has cancer, he or she has unique needs. Cancer in children is very different, and must be treated differently, than cancer in adults. Pediatric Oncologists and Hematologists partner with many different physicians, including your child's primary care physician, to help diagnose and treat your child's cancer in the most effective and compassionate way possible. This team approach allows each physician to provide expert care to meet your child's needs. Most important is the support given to your family and your child to help you better understand and deal with the challenges that you will face.
