Children's Services
Neonatology Services/NICU

At Bon Secours Richmond Health System, we offer comprehensive intensive care treatment for newborns. Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that focuses on the medical and surgical needs of sick or premature newborns. If a baby is born prematurely or at term gestation with special needs, he or she may be brought to one of our neonatology centers (NICUs) for intensive treatment and care.

The three Bon Secours NICUs are located at St. Francis Medical Center, St. Mary's Hospital, and Memorial Regional Medical Center, and are staffed around the clock by more than 20 specially trained and experienced professionals including neonatologists, physicians, specialty nurse practitioners, and respiratory therapists. In addition, there are many members of the care team you may never meet: pediatric radiologists, pharmacy specialists, and lab and radiology staff — team members whose skills are finely tuned for very tiny babies.

As part of your child's care, additional pediatric subspecialists may be included as part of the care team. Subspecialists available at our NICUs include pediatric cardiologists, gastroenterologists, neurologists, pulmonologists, and other subspecialties required for comprehensive NICU care.

We provide advanced critical newborn care that includes the following services for your child and for you:

  • Chaplains and spiritual counseling
  • High-frequency ventilation
  • Lactation consultants
  • Nitric oxide therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Pharmacy services
  • Physical therapy
  • Social services
  • Speech pathology

Bon Secours provides family-centered care for our smallest and most vulnerable patients. Our primary focus is the health of your infant and the support of your family unit. Parents are always welcome in the NICU and encouraged to participate in their infant's care.

When tiny lives are at stake, it takes a highly skilled team to care for your baby. At Bon Secours, you can expect the most advanced medical and compassionate care available.
