Volunteer for the Reach Out and Read Program

The nationally recognized Reach Out and Read program (ROR) provides books for young children when they visit the Richmond Community Hospital Emergency Department or the mobile medical CARE-A-VANS. Volunteers transform the sites into literacy-rich areas for children and parents, while helping families learn the joys and the techniques of reading aloud. Volunteers come from all walks of life but have two important traits in common: a love of books/stories and a genuine interest in helping children. Volunteers read to children and show by example that reading aloud is enjoyable/fun for both parents and children.

For information about Reach Out and Read volunteer opportunities, please call Georgeann Schmied at (804) 545-1937 or send an e-mail to georgeann_schmied@bshsi.org.

Volunteer for the Safe Landings Program

A little time can make a big difference...

Safe Landings provides a flexible and rewarding hands-on volunteer experience for singles, couples, family or church groups, empty-nesters, retirees, students looking to broaden their education - anyone with the desire and ability to offer practical and emotional support to people whose physical and financial needs exceed their current resources. Safe Landings is a free community service that represents one of the many ways that Bon Secours optimizes the medical recovery process. We connect caring volunteers to people of all ages as they recuperate at home - new moms with special challenges to seniors who need an extra hand in regaining and maintaining their independence.

Safe Landings volunteers help clients in a variety of ways, on a schedule that fits any lifestyle. A volunteer might: help with grocery shopping or other errands; take a drive or play cards with a homebound senior; prepare a casserole or help get clean sheets on a bed; provide respite for new moms or older caregivers; take out the trash or sweep a porch; visit or call to offer a kind ear and friendly encouragement.

No technical skills or special education are needed. Volunteer hours may vary from a few each week to several hours a month - during evenings, weekends, or weekdays. This is a great opportunity for busy people who want to give of themselves, learn more about health care and other issues we will all eventually face, and to have fun at the same time. It's also a great introduction to the finest health care system in the area..

TRANSPORTATION VOLUNTEERS are also needed outside the home setting to assist clients to and from medical appointments.

“I think I enjoy our visits and jaunts to the store as much as Bonnie does. She offers a wealth of wisdom and wonderful life experiences! She's a real sweetheart! ”
Debbie R., Safe Landings Volunteer

“Safe Landings helped me, so now I can help others!”
Barbara P ., former Safe Landings client and patient advocate at her residential nursing facility
