healthcare ethics

We ground our approach to ethics in healthcare to the Catholic moral tradition.

The purpose of the Ethics Department is to promote values-based decision making that is consistent with the mission of Bon Secours Health System in both the clinical and corporate environments.
In the clinical setting, the Ethics Department oversees the Bon Secours Richmond Clinical Ethics Committee. Through this committee, the Ethics Department provides healthcare ethics education, staffs clinical ethics consultation service and participates in clinical policy development.

In the corporate setting, the Ethics Department serves as a supportive resource for other departments in the system through participating in special projects and teams, facilitating values-based decision making, providing targeted ethics education to various departments and professions, leading the mission review process for strategic decision making, and by analyzing the ethical ramifications of current trends in healthcare.

The Services We Offer

Clinical Ethics Committee:  This committee is charged with overseeing the clinical ethics strategy within Bon Secours Richmond Health System. This is a volunteer and multi-disciplinary system wide committee comprised of clinicians within Bon Secours Richmond Health System. The Clinical Ethics Committee reports to the Quality Committee of the Bon Secours Richmond Joint Hospitals Board.

Clinical Ethics Consultation Service: An on-call service available 24/7 to assist patients, families, surrogates and clinical staff with addressing ethical issues that arise in the clinical setting.

Healthcare Ethics Education:  Our fall lecture series features three different lectures featuring nationally known ethicists. They speak on timely and practical ethical issues in clinical medicine, nursing, and healthcare. These lectures are free and open to all staff and community members.
Clinical Ethics Case Conference: Every other month we examine the ethical dimensions of cases that have arisen at Bon Secours Virginia with this case study conference.

Department-Specific Ethics Debriefing: This is a facilitated learning process designed to help staff examine specific cases, ongoing issues, special topics in healthcare ethics or policy questions.
