CARMA (Controlling Asthma in the Richmond Metropolitan Area)
Bon Secours CARMA offers free services to children between the ages of 2-18 with asthma. Conceived in 2001, CARMA is a unique community collaborative that works in partnership with families and the community to improve the quality of life for children with asthma. Aspects of the program include:
• Home Visits and Home Education to identify asthma triggers, teach devise usage, and review medication and asthma action plans when applicable.
• Care Coordination for asthmatic children who are seen in the emergency department or hospitalized for a serious asthma attack. Beginning at the hospital, one-on-one education is offered to the child, parents and/or caregivers. Services are coordinated with families, doctors, school nurses, childcare centers and others as needed.
• Community Outreach Services provide asthma education for parents, teachers, childcare centers, school nurses and other professionals upon request. In-school asthma classes are offered for elementary, middle and high school students upon request. Requests for public speakers on any asthma topic can be considered.
If you know a child who might benefit from these services, please contact Lu Grimes at Lu_Grimes@bshsi.org or 804-213-0917.
