Mission Statement
The Mission of the
Bon Secours Health System is to bring compassion to healthcare and to be good help to those in need, especially those who are poor and dying. As a system of caregivers we commit ourselves to help bring people and communities to health and wholeness as part of the healing ministry of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.

Good Education

We have a strong commitment to our community through a variety of outreach and giving programs – from our Care-A-Van program mobile health clinic that provides healthcare for those in need to the support of non-profit organizations like Safe Harbor, a safe haven for women who are victims of domestic violence.

The Care-A-Van travels throughout the metro area to provide free primary, urgent and preventative healthcare. Services include health screenings, immunizations for children, flu shots for adults, school physicals for uninsured children and examination and treatment of sick, uninsured patients.

Bon Secours Health System is committed to being good help to those in need. Rooted in our Mission and Values, and as a Catholic health ministry, we follow a road map carefully designed to ensure our actions reflect long-range focus and are driven by the needs of the people and communities we serve.

This road map is called the Strategic Quality Plan. It includes seven areas of focus:

  • Build Healthier Communities
  • Liberate the Potential of People
  • Align with Premier Practitioners
  • Deliver Clinical Excellence
  • Pursue Focused Growth
  • Achieve Operational Excellence
  • Financial Performance

Our health system's Mission and approach to community care are a core part of the fabric and legacy of Bon Secours. Just ask anyone of our more than 7,000 health system employees about our “Commitment to Serve.” The explanations might vary slightly, but you’ll hear firsthand why serving is our passion.

Dr. Jay Buston serves staff physician for the Bon Secours Richmond Care-A-Van. In 2008, he was named an Outstanding Older Worker by Experience Works. A 1963 graduate of VCU’s Medical College of Virginia, Buston retired at age 65 after 33 years in private practice as a family physician. Buston was volunteering at CrossOver Ministry, a free, local health care clinic, when he was hired as an interim medical director of Bon Secours’ Care-A-Van in 2003. He was 67 at the time.
